Abstract | An exceptionally mild winter and a dry summer during the growing season of 1989-90 in Belgium, incited the development of the following diseases on winter barley: yellow dwarf (barley yellow dwarf luteovirus (BYDV)), yellow mosaic [barley yellow mosaic virus], scald [Rhynchosporium secalis], brown rust [Puccinia hordei] and net blotch [Pyrenophora teres]. BYDV was also prevalent on winter wheat. Glume blotch [Leptosphaeria nodorum] and ear blight [Fusarium] were insignificant. The bacterial flora was abundant on white heads following attacks of BYDV. Other diseases were eyespot [Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides] and take all [Gaeumannomyces graminis]. Finally, it is concluded that the dry summer was particularly favourable for BYDV and was unfavourable for all fungal diseases except powdery mildew [Erysiphe graminis]. Barley and wheat yields related to diseases are described. |
