An alternative to the surgical castration of piglets, based on an evaluation of vaccination against boar taint

Context

In Belgium, piglets are castrated by breeders using surgical castration. The main justifications to castrate are the problem of boar taint in meat and the behaviour of the pigs, especially agonistic and mounting behaviours.

The practice is regulated through a European Directive (2008/120/EC). This is transposed into the Belgian law (AR 17/12/2008). The European Authority would like to make the procedure consistent and encourages European Union Member States to stop surgical castration by 2018. A voluntary Declaration exists and is approved by different actors.

Two alternatives to surgical castration exist: rearing of entire males and rearing of males vaccinated against boar taint. These are highlighted in the AlCaPorc project.

Objectives

The first objective aims to compare the zootechnical results of non-castrated males (entire and vaccinated males), castrated males and females. The studied parameters are growth performance, animal behaviours, quality of the carcass and quality of the meat. An economic simulation is proposed to the sector for approbation.

The second objective focuses on entire males and females. It aims to obtain the same kind of zootechnical data in mixed and single sex groups.

Expected results

The international information concerning alternatives to surgical castration can be centralised and communicated to a regional scale. The zootechnical results of the study are of great interest for the Walloon pig sector. Communication to breeders is a priority.
