Abstract | A large-scale outbreak of Typhula incarnata, previously considered unimportant, occurred in 1976. The disease has been spreading simultaneously with a recrudescence of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). Symptoms of both are visible at the end of winter as scattered patches of yellow plants. The net effect of BYDV on the yield of a plot is slight, surviving tillers largely compensating for dwarfed or missing ones. With T. incarnata the cover developed by the surviving tillers is nearer the normal than with BYDV, but the total yield is more reduced. Since T. incarnata does not attack wheat in Belgium a f.sp. is suspected. Identification of the 2 diseases is discussed on the basis of field symptoms related to seasonal weather variations. |
