The valorization of male calves from dairy farming is today a central issue for breeders and citizens. Questions are on the agenda for calf farming regarding animal welfare, climate impact, socio-economic resilience and changes in practices following the reduction in the use of antibiotics, the gradual ban on individual lodges and the extension of grazing in organic production.
In this context, Walloon breeders are seeking to reintegrate the breeding and fattening of their calves on the farm, but are meeting technical and systemic challenges - linked to current sectors - and need to identify new outlets.
This project is structured around two main axes:
- AXIS 1: Develop new technical and economic benchmarks through on-farm trials
- AXIS 2: Differentiate the product and identify consumer expectations
