Decision support tool, based on a GIS, for assessing the risk of diffuse pollution of surface water and groundwater by pesticides, at agricultural field scale, in the Grand-Duché de Luxembourg
The project aims at carry out a decision support tool to mitigate the risk of water resources contamination by the pesticides at the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The decision support tool is based on the modeling diffuse transfers of pesticides and their metabolites applied in agriculture to surface waters and to the emergence of groundwater. The modeling assesses the risks relative to both active substances and their metabolites. The tool can also be used for new active substances approved in accordance with the procedures laid down in Regulation 1107/2009 / EC. The decision support tool will serve in agricultural extension programs to identify critical substances and agricultural plots causing surface water and groundwater pollution. For such situations, the decision support tool will propose several scenario allowing to mitigate the risk of water contamination in collaboration with farmers. Furthermore, such a tool is useful when making decisions on applications for the placing on the market of new pesticides or re-evaluation of products already marketed. The tool will also be very useful for supporting and objectifying the communication on this sensitive topic with the different stakeholders.
