Project REFLECHI: Collaboration for REndre market gardening, fruit and vegetables industry more resilient to climate change

INVITATION TO THE PRESS

How does abiotic stress (such as drought) and biotic stress (diseases and pests) affect crops such as leeks, onions, cabbages, carrots, strawberries, apples...?

The REFLECHI project, part of the Interreg VI programme in the border region of Flanders, Wallonia and Hauts-de-France, is trying to answer this question. On Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., the project partners will give a press conference in the Flex Lounge of the agricultural fair Agriflanders.

The REFLECHI project focuses on the resilience of vegetable and fruit crops in the border region to the impacts of climate change. This innovative project studies the impact of abiotic stress, such as drought, and biotic stress caused by pathogens and pests on crops such as leeks, onions, cabbages, carrots, beans, chicory, strawberries and apples.

The project manager is Inagro. The other partners are Viaverda on the Flemish side, CARAH, CRA-W and Université de Mons on the Walloon side and FREDON Hauts-de-France, Unilet and Université de Picardie Jules Verne on the French side. The APEF, on the French side, is a partner associated with the project. Emphasis is placed on follow-up, practical and field research, pilot experiments and bibliographical studies. This is why we are looking for concrete solutions to make crops more resilient to the risks of climate change.

The cross-border approach leverages complementary expertise from project partners and allows for a wider range of cultures and issues to be addressed. This partnership plays a crucial role in helping producers adapt to climate change and enhancing the sustainability of agriculture and horticulture.

With REFLECHI, we are moving forward together on the path of a food production that is time-tested in the border region.
